PLEASE TAKE NOTE – THERE WILL BE NO IN-PERSON WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY 7/5/20

From Pastor Erin….    Dear Members,
Due to the dramatic increase of COVID-19 cases in the county, and an abundance of new restrictions, we will not have in-person worship on Sunday.  In our conversations as a council, we came to an agreement.  Outdoor worship was lovely, but getting very hot.  In-person worship feels safe for some in our congregation, but not for others.

On a personal note, after a weekend of our family camping at a national park in Maryland, we thought we were very careful. But the latest county recommendations insist on quarantine and testing for ANYONE coming back into PA from another state. Brian and I got one test on tuesday, and we’ll get our second test on Thursday.  To be very clear, we are not sick nor do we have any reason to believe that we were exposed to anyone who was ill.  But if we expect others to follow Allegheny County’s regulations and recommendations, we must also.

This is a very confusing and uncertain time to be the church.  But our certain hope is not based in how often we can gather or in what form; our certain hope is founded in and based on Christ’s faithfulness, and God’s saving grace.  There are so many aspects of being Christ’s body on earth, and we continue to live out our baptism in whatever setting we find ourselves in.  Please continue to pray for all who are affected both locally and globally by this pandemic.

We’ll make calls to all who do not have email addresses, and I’ll send out a Youtube link on Saturday night.  If you feel safe attending worship in person and desire to do so, may I recommend Faith Lutheran in White Oak on Lincoln Way.  Pastor Michael Ryan is a close colleague and would be happy to have you.

Congrats Graduates!
Samantha Gibbons – Elizabeth Forward     Alaina Mulvihill – Thomas Jefferson

We are so proud of you.

click here to see the recording of our worship on sunday June 14th.  we had 24 people and beautiful weather!  hope to see you next week!

ZOOM Bible Study:  We have been meeting on this video conferencing software every Thursday evening at 7pm  It’s easy to download and run!  We review the gospel reading for the upcoming Sunday and have informal conversation centered around God’s Word.

Masks Available: We have a small stash of both cloth and disposable masks in the Communication Room.  Please remember to consider the safety and health of others when you come to the church and wear your mask when you engage with your sisters and brothers in Christ.

VBS: There will be no VBS this summer, due to the high risk and difficulty of protecting the health of all involved.

Office Hours: Dorothy will be in the office 10am-2pm as usual on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Home Communions: If you are unable to attend public in-person worship gatherings, please contact Pastor Erin if you would like to have Holy Communion brought to your home.

Handbells: We are currently refraining from singing together during worship because of scientific research that shows singing being a real risk for airborne droplets and viral transmission.  This is hard. We Lutherans are a musical people!  If you have interest in a different way of making music, consider learning to play handbells together with us!  Meeting for now, on Thursdays at 10am, with a socially distanced practice at the church.

Youtube Videos: We will continue to record worship each week and make it available on out Youtube channel.  All our previous services can be found by searching for “Peace In Greenock” on Youtube, or clicking the links that are sent out each week.

Attached is a letter in two forms, PDF and DOCX, for you to read before coming to church on Sunday. Please let me know if you have any concerns or questions.  If you know for sure that you will be in attendance, please respond to this email accordingly.  If you will not be attending, please let me know if you would like to receive Holy Communion at your home.

Good Morning Church!

I want to thank you for all the ways you engaged with my sermon and my words last week both in person with the council and on facebook posts.  As a leader in the whitest denomination in the country, I am deeply committed to exposing white supremacy in the church, identifying it for what it is, and identifying my own privilege as well.  Listening to the voices of people of color and amplifying their words are what is now needed from white leaders – especially within the whitest denomination in the county.

Five years ago next week, nine people were murdered by ELCA Lutheran Dylan Roof at the Mother Emmanuel church in Charleston, South Carolina.   A resolution to commemorate June 17 as a day of repentance for the martyrdom of the Emanuel Nine was adopted by the Churchwide Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 2019.  The ELCA has shared resources to be used in congregations, and part of our liturgy today will come from that.  I’d invite you to sit with feelings of discomfort when they arise and listen for the voice of the Spirit moving.  Our sermon today is from our Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, who also addresses the same topic.

Returning to In-Person Worship!

Council met on Monday June 1st and among our discussion topics was returning to in-person worship!  Our goal, barring any changes to virus outbreaks or local illness, is to meet JUNE 14th at 10:45am for an OUTDOOR WORSHIP on the basketball court and grassy areas.  This service will look very different, and we will be holding to CDC guidelines for social distancing and preventing spread. BUT – it is a small step forward.  Many in our church will not feel comfortable yet participating in any small gathering.  We will be finding extra ways to include our hisk-risk members, including communion at home, or drive in communion after worship.  More information to prepare you for this event will be forth coming.
